By Sunday, we hope you can say

  • “Today I understand up close what I used to see only from afar.”
  • “I’m taking the quiet home with me.”

Baja California What Cowboy Camping is

This isn’t cowboy cosplay. It’s an invitation to learn from a living Baja tradition.

Baja California Cowboy Camping seal

A small, hands-on weekend on the land, taught by people whose families have cared for it for generations.

It’s for people who would rather learn with their hands than be entertained. Beginners are welcome, and teens can come with a parent. It isn’t a resort weekend, a costume party or a thrill ride.

From our horseback outings

Real moments from past Mud & Lotus Baja rides.

A phone-free day on the land

From Saturday morning to early Sunday afternoon, the whole group goes phone-free.

What’s left is what’s in front of you: the horses, the trail, the fire and the people around it. That’s the point.

Abel and Coach carry a phone for emergencies. Before the weekend, we’ll send you the number to give your family.

Your guides

  • Abel Núñez Nuño, in a plaid shirt, cap, jeans and a rodeo belt buckle, stands on straw beside a black shepherd dog at the Mud & Lotus Baja ranch
    Abel Núñez Nuño

Expedition lead. Abel grew up on a working ranch, riding from the age of four or five and milking cows before school. He’s a trained lifeguard with about ten real water rescues and has wilderness first-aid training. He also keeps our two vintage Land Cruisers running. In the field, he makes the final call.

  • Anas “Coach” Canon, in a dark jacket and cap, sits on a gray horse with a coiled rope at the saddle, on the beach at sunset
    Anas “Coach” Canon

Host and second guide. Coach has lived here for ten years and has explored this area for almost twenty. He translates between English and Spanish and makes sure every guest feels at home. Abel’s family taught Coach to care for the land; Coach has trained Abel in Krav Maga since about 2022.

No quiero quedarme yo solo con el conocimiento. Quiero que la demás gente también sepa y disfrute un poco de la alegría que me da lo que hago.

I don’t want to keep the knowledge to myself. I want other people to learn and experience some of the happiness this work gives me.

The weekend, Friday to Sunday

You’ll get the full schedule and a packing list before you arrive.

  1. Friday Preparation at Mud & Lotus Baja

    Night one: at the ranch

Arrive, meet Abel and Coach and share a meal. Learn the basics of horses, tack and camp, then set up camp on the ranch.

  2. Saturday Into the backcountry

    Night two: field camp, inland

After breakfast and a safety check, head inland with the horses to a site about three to five miles away. Make camp, cook together and sleep on bedrolls under the Baja sky.

  3. Sunday Return together

    Back to the ranch

Make breakfast, break camp, pack out everything and return to the ranch together.

Along the way you’ll practice reading and handling a horse, checking tack, making camp, cooking in the field and leaving no trace.

Safety and respect

  • Animals firstHorses are partners, not equipment. If an animal is tired, hurt or uneasy, the plan changes.
  • Checked every timeBefore every weekend we check the route, land access, water and our emergency plan. If it can’t be done safely, we change the plan or we don’t go.
  • What it asks of youLong hours outdoors, uneven ground, carrying your own gear and two nights sleeping on the ground.
  • Leave no traceEverything we carry in, we carry out. Ask before photographing people, homes or animals.

Please note. Horses, camping and the outdoors carry real risks, including injury. Plans can change for weather, animal welfare, land access or safety. This is a guided outdoor experience, not a medically supported one. Before your weekend you’ll sign a release and fill out a short health form.

Questions people ask

Do I need a U.S. visa?

No. We’re in Mexico. International guests can fly into Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) without passing through the United States. Mexico’s entry rules depend on your passport, so check yours before you travel.

How do I get there?

The ranch is about 30 miles (48 km) south of San Diego. Drive down or fly into Tijuana, and we’ll help you plan the route and the border crossing.

Do I need riding or camping experience?

No. Beginners are welcome. Friday covers the fundamentals, and the guides make sure everyone is ready before heading inland.

Can I bring my own group?

Yes. On the form, choose a men’s weekend, a mixed group or a private weekend for your own group of four.

Is it less if I bring my own horse?

Yes, considerably less. Most of our riders come from outside the country, so they ride our horses. If you’d like to bring your own, tell us on the form and we’ll send you the price and what your horse will need.

How do I book?

Send a request with the form below. We’ll reply personally, in English or Spanish, with available dates. Your spot is confirmed when you pay in full.
